The Daily Five

Solar-Powered Speakerphone; Think Ready To Build EVs; Hydrogen: The Fuel for Losers; NASA Goes for Energy Efficiency in New Building; Land Rover LRX with hybrid drivetrain

Solar-Powered Speakerphone. Scosche has announced that the solCHAT, a solar-powered hands-free speakerphone, is now available. The solCHAT features a built-in solar panel that continuously recharges the solCHAT’s lithium-ion battery.

Think Is Back and Ready to Make EVs. The Norwegian courts have approved the company’s debt settlement plan, and it can now exit court protection, taking it one step closer to producing its electric Think City two-seater and bringing it to the U.S., Think said in a statement released this morning. I love these little cars, and hope they do really bring them here.

Hydrogen: The Fuel for Losers. The present hydrogen fuel cell needs to back to the R&D lab, says Burton Richter, the Paul Pigott professor of the physical sciences and a Nobel Laureate. “The present hydrogen fuel cells are losers… Losers,” he said. “They have to go back to the R&D lab.”

NASA Goes for Energy Efficiency in New Building. A new $20.6 million NASA building is being hailed as the greenest-ever construction project by the federal government. The building will have 20,000 square feet of rooftop photovoltaic panels.

Land Rover LRX with hybrid drivetrain. Based on underpinnings shared with the Freelander (that’s the LR2 here in the States), the LRX could feature a transverse engine driving the front wheels with the first application of the marque’s e TERRAIN electric drive rear axle, which may be capable of powering the rear wheels using battery power only at speeds up to 20 miles per hour. No word yet on whether that powertrain will include a plug or feature a gasoline or diesel engine.
