The Daily Five

First Zero Energy home; Solar-powered ferries; Making Power With Gravity; Mobile Electric Car Charger; Save $127K Annually With LEDs

San Francisco to have first Zero Energy home. With an eight kilowatt solar array, floor plates acting as passive solar collectors, a 1,500 gray water reclamation system that takes water from sinks, showers, and tubs, to irrigate the garden, LED fixtures and high efficiency appliances, this is definitely my kind of home!

Solar-powered ferries in Hong Kong. You gotta see these! Hong Kong has decided to combat the area’s pollution problems by deploying solar-powered ferries that operate using three-quarters solar energy and only one-quarter liquefied petroleum gas.

Making Power With Gravity. Vycon has created a flywheel that captures the energy contained in cargo containers at ports being lowered by cranes and feeds it back to the crane for the next hoist. Now that is some serious reuse of energy!

Mobile Electric Car Charger. Plug in anywhere — on the road, at a friend’s house, in a public parking lot — and add the cost of topping off your electric car’s battery to your monthly utility bill. That’s the idea of an intelligent mobile charger developed by Juice Technologies.

ASU To Save $127K Annually With LEDs. By switching to LED lights in six parking facilities, Arizona State University expects to save $127,000 a year in electricity and maintenance costs. Wow. Now imagine if most major buildings like this switch over – we could be saving a ton of money AND energy!
