The Daily Five

Coda electric cars; Kinetic gadget charger; Plug-in Prius; Green football stadium; Steam-powered three wheeler

Coda Unveils $45K Electric Sedan for 2010. Coda Automotive has just revealed their electric Coda sedan, which is about as far as you can get from the Tesla Roadster or Fisker Karma — and that’s what they are going for. Low-speed electric carmaker Miles Electric Vehicles launched Coda today with the goal of producing highway-capable electric vehicles priced and designed for the rest of us who don’t have $100,000 to spend on a Tesla. (Oh but I wish I did!)

Charge your gadgets while you walk down the street. The nPower PEG (Personal Energy Generator) from a company called Tremont Electric takes the kinetic energy you make while walking and enables you to charge your cellphone, iPod, or any other portable gadget that is plugged into it. They say the system can charge an average-sized device up to 80% in only an hour.

Toyota to begin leasing plug-in Prius hybrids in Japan starting in late 2009. Although a small start, later this year Toyota will begin leasing 200 plug-capable Priuses to government and commercial fleets only in Japan. Hopefully someday soon we will start seeing manufacturer-sanctioned plug-in hybrids from Toyota here in the U.S. too.

The new New York Jets & Giants stadium goes for the green. The EPA and the New Meadowlands Stadium Company have signed a memorandum that outlines plans to incorporate environmentally-friendly materials into the construction of the new stadium in 2010. They want to cut annual water use by 25%, make it 30% more energy efficient than Giants Stadium, and increase total recycling by 25% and recycle 75% of construction waste.

Eco-friendly Stauro has three wheels and a steam engine. A team of 7 people from Welden have created the Stauro, which should have an orange-oil powered steam engine capable of 700 horsepower. While only a prototype, I would drive one of these in a heartbeat…wouldn’t you?

Have a fantastic weekend everyone, and thanks for reading EcoTech Daily!
