GM May Break Up SUV-Truck Marriage to Cut Fuel Use, Emissions: The days of the dinosaur SUVs are numbered. Bloomberg reports that General Motors is serious about putting its sport utility vehicle line on a fossil fuel diet. They’ll do it by ceasing the traditional practice of designing SUVs on truck frames. The next generation of SUVs will be dramatically lighter unibody designs having more in common with passenger vehicles than heavy pickups. (Bloomberg)
Korean Village Runs On 100% Solar Power: You’ve probably never heard of Donggwang. But the island town has the rare distinction of being the first in Korea — and one of the first in the world — to run on 100 percent solar power. The village’s 40 homes and its schoolhouse all sport solar panels after a government-subsidized drive to adopt renewable power. Jeju-du island also maintains a large wind farm installation. Endangered Species Up The Risk Of Extinction For Other Species In Ecological Community: Theoretical biologists at Linköping University and the University of Sheffield have demonstrated the codependency of natural creatured by showing that threatened species put their neighbors at risk. A study released last week supports the theory of “cascading extinction,” where trouble in one part of the food web causes a collapse in others. The research may encourage scientists intervene during a first wave of a local extinction even, hoping to stave-off wider regional consequences. (Science Daily)

Brazil warns EU on green biofuel controls: The battle over biofuels continues to heat up. Members of the European Union are talking about restrictions on biofuel imports which don’t meet certain environmental on social impact standards. Unsurprisingly, biofuel-exporting nations are raising a fuss over the idea. Andre Aranha Correa do Lago, head of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry’s energy department, told reporters Friday that his country’s biofuel program has no negative impact, and he’s planning to bend a few ears in Brussels to underline up his claims.
